The next production title featured in the trailer is SKA films, from some quick research into them I found out that they were associated with some additional productions such as the film snatch, which is also a gangster/crime film. There is then an overlap of some deep music, which lasts around 2 seconds and then suddenly stops as a shot starts of a man seated in the driver’s seat of a car on the phone and wearing a hat that would normally be recognised as something worn in the 90’s, this is an example of symbolic codes being used, as already they guy looks like a suspicious character, this works towards the intended mis en scene. The guy on the phone says ‘we’re on’, which is also a term normally associated with a ‘bank-job’. The scene then changes to an underground den (which appears to be a boxing club), where there are several mean looking men sitting around a poker table, situated in the middle of a boxing ring, looking at their cards, this is an example of typical iconography associated with Gangsters. The camera angle compliments the shot by being on eye level with the men sitting around the poker table, the camera cycles between different angles of the table, to give a view of the men involved with the gambling, which gives it a very professional camera work look, in addition to the camera work the sound in the background of people chucking chips onto the homemade table. This sound happens three times the new shot kicks in with some upbeat music.
The next shot is of a man in a beige full length coat, he is in a scene that looks like an east-end flat, the flat itself is very messy, which makes us think that it could possibly be a squat, also the man is carrying a machete, this is very gangster and connects very well with the criminal culture and mis en scene of a gangster film. The man also has an unpleasant looking injury on his arm which looks like there has been some violent action taking place. This is a very quick shot and is a good teaser for the audience, because we are all asking ourselves why, what has happened? In addition the decoration of the room is very 90’s.
The cameras in this trailer never seem to be static, they are always moving which makes the trailer more interesting, there is an example of this in the next shot where you can see a guy who appears to be in shock where part of his hair is missing and smoking, he also appears to be tied up and gagged. This shot is quite light hearted and gives a representation of the mood of the film, which is serious but comical at the same time, this connects with my original statement of me looking to develop a niche film, as it unusual of the gangster genre.
Another aspect of this film I have noticed is the character set up, it is very stereotyped as they all have the gangster look to them, they have also been in previous films that have been associated with crime, which makes the audience associate them with that genre. It’s important for me to understand that my limited budget will mean that the actors I will have available to me are new to the film scene, which will mean I will need to be selective about the look of them so that they put across the genre in a good way.
