Deconstruction of 'Smoking aces 2'
This teaser trailer starts with universal pictures, which is a well known institution, this clip is relativly quick. The second clip after the institution is a close up of a body of a man, wearing a burgandy velour dressing gown. The props featured such as the jewellery of the actor, shows iconography of a gangster type appearance, the cards in the mans hands represent gambling and luck, a typical aspect related to gangsterism. The jewellery makes him appear quite wealthy, rings are associated with celebrity status in the underworld, it is a form of identity and social importance.
The next clip shows him doing a card trick, this connects with the idea of him being familiar and skilled in this particular field, the editing makes the trick seem fast and confident. The clip then continues to show him standing up throwing/ flicking the card towrds the camera view, the camera films him from a low angle showing him to have power. The card (ace of spades) has representation, and is symbollic to death as well as making connections with the title of the film 'smoking aces'. The sunglasses and dress code of the man, is partial consealment of identity, giving the film an area of mystery. I also find that the way that the charcater is represented shows an atribute of rebellion and power. The low angle shot with the camera also suggests this.
The next clip is a close up shot of a mans shoulders and face, he is lifting up scuba diving goggles, revealing his identity, the camera shot stays focused on him, typical props include a knife in one hand a spike in the other and the background of a tropical location ( blue sea & mountings). This is starting to build up the representation of each character its almost like showing their abilities, which will somehow relate to the film later on.
The next clip is of a different location it is more urban, The guy is disguised in a wheel chair but it is clear he is the subject that the producer wants the audience to focus on as the camera uses tracking to follow the man. HE stands up using a pair of uzi's to shoot at another gang, shows dis-regard for the law, etc superior to society. People on the floor are looked down on by the camera angle, it is half-way towards a birds eye angle.
The next clip is a quick clip to show that the representation of a rustafarian type looking guy shooting with uzi's was a man actually wearing a mask, this brings in complexity and is a jolt clip it gives the film a twist. These events happen over a series of quick clips.
Editing then plays its part in the film rewinding back like a cctv video, it goes back to the beggining.Clip Titles are now introduced with non-digetic sound of the tape rewinding as well as a gun reloading, the next title flows in with a swoop sound.
The text links to film rewinding says before Buddy 'ACES' isreal ... Got smoked (these titles being dialect of criminal activity). The trailer then carries on with a gun scene with a camera angle showiing a medium close up of a mans body and face. The representation of the values and ideologies can be seen in some of the props for example the strap of ammunition over his chest shows violence, gun crime and ruthlessnes.
A title then interupts and says ' there was another' this leads the audience in the direction of trying to understand the maning behind what is going on, The media language makes connections to a previous occurance that reminds us that this film is a sequel to another. the following clips are titles that discribe the film in order they go, 'Crazy' 'Bloody' 'twisted' 'hit', these words are then associated with clips in the film, with short scenes of action.
There is an aspect of a 'hyperdermic needle effect', people are intrigued by the violence and therefore listen to the story completly forgetting that the criminal activity is wrong, they will be made to take a side as to which criminal they will support throught the film. Because the media is so strong and people cant relate to it personally they are dictated what to think about it. The audience only have outside influence which is the media, they do not have personal experience, this creates interest.
The next clip is quite distrubing it shows the actor vinne jones hitting a spike into someones head in a lab, this is more of shock to the audience than anything else its the fear of the media that keeps them intereted. They dont want to see a violent clip, without knowing the explanation behind it. The audience are sitting there trying to find out why?
The titles then come back into action the next one being ' that went down' this relates both to the avtion in the clip as well as the over all story being told. during this title there is asynchronous sound of a phone ringing, keeping the adrenaline of the audience running, they want to know whats happening.
The next clip starts with introduction from the sound being the phone ringing, the audience can now see who was using the phone, they can also hear the conversation, that there is money involved.
An effect of the actor throwing a piece of paper acts quite well, it puts fear into the audience as the camera takes the place of the viewers eyes, this effect works well.
A new title then comes up saying '' smoking aces 2'' indicating that this film is a sequel. A new clip starts of a man talking, this being digetic sound, he says 'am i in some sort of trouble', this leads the audience in the direction of the victim in this film, as they still dont fully know what is going on they make significant progress in trying to follow what it is about, its the slight element of confusion, created by the editing that adds interest.
The clips then starty to speed up where there is a build up of action for the viewers, new titles come into the film stating the motifs of the film, these being 'the worlds most deadly assasins' for this part of the film the music starts, in order to bring in the audiences interests. the titles below follow on from the one mentioned above.
'are' The music track mentions hell etc, it is a representation of
'ruthless' the evil characters involved.
'sexy'
'cunning'
'physcotic'
for each adjective there is an example clip from the film that is given, to show the types of characters there are. these clips are very quick and require the audiences attention to make any sense of what is going on.
One of the clips following oon from the titles is that of a woman in a sex scene, she puts a gun to a mans head and the camera shot zooms out from him to an over shoulder angle, this gives a good representation of fear. The clip then changes to a view from his postition and that is of him being shot by her as well as her reaction, which is her laughing.
digetic sound from charcters is used to describe the behaviour of these assins, one actor says ' your like a raw piece of meat there for the rockweilers'
We are given a clip of the target, so that we know, who they are all after.
There are also some actions scenes such as a truck smashing through gates with some chracters from earlier laughing their heads off in the cabins. The camera angle consists of a long shot to a close up in the cabin of the truck.
The next title is the 'director of narc' this implements that the target is perhaps in the police and related to the team of narcotics which is the drugs team, drugs being another implementation/representation of it being a gangster film.
a different genre of music then restarts in the next few clips, still running as asynchronous it is more rock related and gives a mood of aggresion, what with the clips getting quicker it really does juice up the trailer, to make it more action packed and exciting.
