SMOKING ACES FILM POSTER

This is a film poster for Smoking Aces, i used it in my analyses as i thought it was very succesful in grabbing my attention.

As posters main intentions are to advertise and explain, it's important for me to understand the features involved.

From looking at this poster i can see that there are clear codes and conventions, the genre is that of a gangster/film noire. The props such as guns,revolvers, cigars, suits and playing cards represent the ganster genre, they are all asociates.

The first thing on this poster that grabbed my attention was the white background, i found it very vibrant and contrasting to the characters who are in black and white, with red ties.

The title of this film has been done in the texture of metal, the o is replaced with the butt of a bullet with a heart from a card in it. this is associated with the codes and conventions.

I also liked the photoshopped effect of the glass cracking as the bullet hits it, dividing each character to their own shard of glass, this is a good code for showing division amongst the characters and their roles in the film.

The cards add the codes and convetions of their being a lot of luck associated with the film, and as we all know luck is a very unpredictable thing, this creates great interest to the audience and is a good sales technique.

I will be looking at this poster closely when designing the poster for the film.
